Exam Board - AQA

Through our science curriculum we aim to encourage students to be more curious about the world around them, ask questions of each other and themselves and to develop essential skills that vary from planning to problem solving and evaluating.

Years 7-8

Students follow the science national curriculum in years 7 and 8, using the Exploring Science scheme. The course is arranged into topics which are biology, physics or chemistry based. There is a heavy emphasis on practical work and discovery as well as developing investigative skills.

Years 9-11

Year 9, year 10 and year 11 students are studying the new combined science GCSEs. The new science GCSEs are heavily practically orientated, with practical skills being examined through written papers at the end of the course, rather than through the coursework route. At the end of year 11 students will be examined through the AQA examining body and will sit four examinations.
The combined Synergy course is divided into two main sections, which contain connections between areas of biology, physics and chemistry. Students will study a number of different units that focus either on life and environmental sciences or physical sciences.

Sixth Form

At KS5 students can study A-level physics. This is a two year course and consequently, we do not offer the one year AS course. Over the two years students will study a range of units varying from forces and mechanics to cosmology and fundamental particles. There is a range of compulsory practicals that students must complete and unlike previous years, there isn’t a practical examination.
