Mathematics is a large core department with excellent teachers who are committed to providing young people with life changing opportunities and ensure that all our students achieve their full potential in this very important and highly demanding subject. We pride ourselves on being caring and supportive, and build positive relationships with our students that not only result in enjoyment within lessons but also equip them to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
Mathematics in Year 7 and 8 aims to provide students with an appreciation of the usefulness, power and beauty of the subject. Some of the aspects of this are awareness that mathematics is a universal language with diverse applications and that it is both a tool for solving problems in a wide range of contexts and also a discipline with its own inherent structure and aesthetic appeal.
The use of interactive whiteboards and specific mathematical software enhance the teaching and learning in lessons. The mathematics department has created and developed schemes of work which focus on deepening pupils understanding of different branches of mathematics. The aims and objective include:
• Understanding mathematical reasoning and processes
• The ability to apply mathematics and to evaluate the significance of results
• The ability to develop strategies to solve problems in which solutions are not obvious
• The acquisition of mathematical intuition
Students complete Key Stage 3 at the end of Year 8.
The students progress on to studying GCSE mathematics course in Year 9 with more able students studying higher tier and the rest studying foundation tier. The examinations are at the end of Year 11. The examinations consist of three papers, each 1 hour and 30 minutes long. Of the three examination papers, two of the papers allow pupils to use a calculator.
This qualification in mathematics encourages students to develop confidence in, and a positive attitude towards, mathematics and to recognise the importance of mathematics in their own lives and to society. This qualification prepares students to make informed decisions about the use of technology and the management of money. It also provides further learning opportunities and career choices through:
• Developing knowledge, skill and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts, including number, algebra, geometry, measures, statistics and probability
• Using their knowledge and understanding to make connections between mathematical concepts
• Applying functional element of mathematics to solve problems in real-life situations
Students who have not achieved at least Grade 4 in their GCSE examinations will have time tabled lessons to help them gain this valuable qualification.
The students continuing with their A-level mathematics qualification will be sitting the examination for the old specification in the summer of 2018.
For the students opting to study A-level mathematics this is a linear course, which is examined via three 2 hour written examination papers at the end of two years. The modules carry equal weight and there is no coursework. Calculators are allowed in the examinations.
The course will teach students how higher level algebra can be used to solve a variety of problems. The topics on sequences and series will broaden their understanding of its application in the financial sector. Learners will also explore calculus (differentiation and integration) and learn how it is applied to create mathematical models and solve problems. The use of vectors in the aviation and marine industry will also become clear by studying this subject. The statistics element of this qualification will further their understanding of probability and teach them how to test statistical hypotheses. The mechanics part of the course will bring the concepts of forces, moments and Newton’s laws alive.
